JAPN 300: Introduction to Advanced Communication (MLO 1 & 2/Fall 2012)
Course Description
This course is a bridge course from intermediate to advanced Japanese language. It continues development of proficiency in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students develop communication strategies and cultural knowledge to prepare for advanced courses.
Reflective Narrative
In taking "Introduction to Advanced Communication", I was able to develop my language skills to a level which prepared me for the remainder of my upper division courses I would take at California State University, Monterey Bay. One way of improving my presentation ability was by creating a Self-Introduction (自己PR) meant for applying to any job and then taking questions from the people who were interviewing me. Furthermore, my cultural awareness was raised by the various activities we did in class, such as practicing karaoke and creating a presentation about cultural aspects in Japan. For instance, my project discussed how to properly enter and exit a house one would visit.
More than any other class, my interest in learning grammar points and finding similar ones were fostered in this class. The level of JAPN 300 finally opened my eyes to the intricacies of Japanese language, and also gave me some tools in learning how to properly dissect those intricacies. It is hard to discuss how I wish to develop the knowledge obtained from this class further because ultimately my entire time in college has been an exercise in expanding upon JAPN 300. However, it is important to state that without this class, my ability to improve my Japanese would have been severely hindered.
