JAPN 404: Advanced Japanese Research (Spring 2015/MLO 4)
Course Description
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral and written presentations to finalize research project for Capstone in Japanese using appropriate media.
Reflective Narrative
JAPN 404 is a continuation of the Pre-Capstone course I took last semester as well as being supplement to the WLC 400 I took concurrently. In this class we built on top of research strategies learned in the previous class as well as learned how to write academic papers in Japanese. Furthermore, we also built upon the fundamentals of essential Microsoft Office programs such as Excel and Powerpoint and learned how to use them to create an efficient way to view data not only for ourselves, but also the audience. I also was able to enhance my presentation skills by practicing in front of the professor, especially in my pronunciation of Japanese and its pitch accents.
This class also taught me how to pick a topic which was viable enough to do research on through both literature and surveys. The topic I eventually ended up picking discussed the frequency of use, content posted, and the ethics which are associated with social networking.
Though I learned many writing and research techniques, I feel that this class also built upon my previous Japanese knowledge from all the other MLOs. I was challenged every day in this class with thinking about how to represent my data, how to write a specific paragraph, etc. At times I wanted to just stop working on my capstone, but I was able to push through to a degree that I am extremely proud of the work I have produced for this class.
If you would like to see samples of my work, please go to the Capstone page for further information.
