JAPN 403: Pre-Capstone (MLO 4/Fall 2014)
Course Description
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral and written presentations to develop research project for Capstone in Japanese using appropriate media.
Reflective Narrative
"Pre-Capstone" prepared me for next semester and the writing of our graduation thesis which all CSUMB students are required to write. We began this class by brainstorming topics for us to use for our capstones, and predominately focused on the research portion of the project and ways we could efficently search for new sources. In taking this class, I was able to work towards completion of MLO4: Research and Technology. Furthermore, I also learned effective critical thinking skills to assist me in quickly identifying the validity of any given source and to assess its value towards my own research. Technologies we learned to utilize included Google Drive and Forms as well as effective methods for making graphs via Powerpoint and Excel.
This class was also an education in learning how certain topics do not necessarily fall under the branch of capstone research. My initial topic wanted to explore the Okinawan traditional dance of Eisaa and how the dance had transformed from its roots into modernity. Unfortunately, the topic was not one which could have a survey created about it and I ended up having to stop research on the project altogether. Nonetheless, I came out of this class understanding how to approach the capstone.
If you would like to see samples of my work, please go to the Capstone page for further information.
