MLO 4: Research and Technology
Outcomes:
4.1. Students gain knowledge of appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply them in their studies.
4.2. Students use appropriate technologies in research and studies relative to Japanese language and culture.
4.3. Students collect, manage and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
Courses Taken:
WLC 400: Capstone
JAPN 403: Pre-Capstone
JAPN 404: Advanced Japanese Research
Reflective Narrative:
4.1. Through all three of these classes I have taken during the 2014-2015 academic year, I have obtained tools to do legitimate, academic research in two different languages. The basis for which our entire undergraduate thesis needs to be written, I had to learn how to properly cite academic sources in both MLA and APA formats, use academic search engines such as WorldCat and JSTOR, and learn proper writing and formatting techniques for writing papers in Japanese.
4.2. As technology quickly evolves, so must our understanding of it and the potential uses within academia. We were taught how to properly utilize these technologies within our capstone. This included Google Drive (especially Google Forms and Spreadsheet), Powerpoint, and Microsoft Word. The cornerstone of our capstone relied heavily on our ability to use these sources to their fullest potential.
4.3. As stated above, we were taught about technologies which were helpful towards the completion of my thesis. The main portion, however, was heavily based on a survey which I distributed by various means (social networks, etc.) Through this survey I was able to produce a project which was considered enough to be worthy of a college graduate. Furthermore, I began to see the need for technology not just within the hallowed halls of academic, but also for a variety of other uses which includes communication with friends, essential knowledge for working within a company, etc.
